Baglio del Marchese Masseria sul mare Marsala - Sicily

On the western coast of Sicily, between Marsala and Mazara del Vallo, lies the Masseria Baglio del Marchese: a luxury period residence and farm stay, just steps away from the splendid sandy beaches for which this part of Sicily is famous. Masseria Baglio del Marchese is an imposing farmstead set within a vast 700 hectare estate, much of which, for over two centuries, has been used for the cultivation of grapes, with vineyards extending in to the Margi Spanò Nature Reserve.

Originally the property of the bishop's see, the Masseria Baglio del Marchese subsequently passed in to the hands of the Marquis Montalto Spanò, for whom it served as elegant hunting lodge and summer residence. Some 200 years later, Silvia Montalto Spanò, direct descendent of the noble family, has transformed the aristocratic summer residence in luxury farmstay, surrounded by the sea and peaceful countryside of Sicily.

Many of the building's original features can still be admired, such as the romantic inner courtyards, reminiscent of those described in Giuseppe Tomasi's most famous novel, "The Leopard". The marble floored rooms of the Masseria Baglio del Marchese are still imbued with the charm of centuries past: adorned with precious textiles and tapestries, period paintings, and the finest porcelain.

On the Montalto estate, a number of highly acclaimed Sicilian wines are produced, which guests of the Masseria can experience during one of the property's specially organised wine tastings. For those wishing to pass an entertaining evening in the company of the owners and other residents, informal dinners are organised, to be prepared and eaten together. The cost of participation is based on that of the ingredients used.

The Masseria Baglio del Marchese also organizes boat trips, including lunch on board, to Favignana, one of the most beautiful of the nearby Egadi islands.
