Hotel Locanda del Postino 4 stars
Hotel Locanda del Postino Malfa - Salina - Isole Eolie
The Locanda del Postino is a delightful little hotel situated in Pollara, on the island of Salina, one of Sicily's enchanting Aeolian islands. From the Locanda, the warm waters of the Mediterranean sea lie within easy walking distance, by way of a spectacularly scenic cliff edge pathway or flight of stone steps.
The Hotel Locanda del Postino was once the home of the local Priest and was the largest and most centrally placed of Pollara's houses. Situated in the shallow basin which is all that remains of the volcanic island's largest crater, the hotel is a typical Aeolian construction complete with charming patio from where to admire a stunning view of the sea and the nearby islands of Alicudi and Filicudi. After careful restoration work, the original "bagghiu", or covered terrace, surrounding the house and the old "palmento" equipment room, have been converted in attractive spaces where to relax whilst reading a good book or conversing with other hotel guests.
La Locanda del Postino has just ten spacious bedrooms, with 2, 3 or 4 beds. The rooms offer an appealing combination of traditional Sicilian island furnishings and modern amenities. Each room opens out on to its own private sea view patio, from where to observe the legendary sunsets of Salina.
The flower decked terrace and courtyard of La Locanda del Postino provide charming dining venues, where to enjoy the finest local cuisine accompanied by a glass or two of Malvasia wine. Not to be missed: those dishes prepared using the Aeolian islands' legendary capers.
Whilst staying at La Locanda del Postino, guests have every opportunity to explore the sea of the Aeolian archipelago. Three hundred meters are all that separate the hotel from Balate, a tiny fishing village carved in to the rock, where the oscar-nominated Il Postino (The Postman) movie was filmed. Boats, with or without crew, are available for rent in the nearby S. Marina.
