Lying to the North of Sicily, the archipelago of the Eolie Islands is today a major tourist destination thanks to its cultural importance and stunning natural landscape. It is comprised of 10 islands, 7 of which are completely uninhabited.
The inhabited islands are Alicudi, Filicudi, Salina, Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli and Lipari, the latter being the largest and site of the most important monuments. All the islands share volcanic origins. The volcano on Stromboli is still active. Cultivation of Capers is of great economic importance as is the production of the prestigious Malvasia wine of Salina. The fine black sand beaches of Vulcano are quite unique.
